A door that began with a belief.
The composition came from the client's personal belief. Two different animals were carved on opposing sides, each placed within a private symbolic order. We keep its specific meaning confidential. Our role was to translate the brief into proportion, structure, and carved teak that could be made and installed accurately.

How a commission
takes shape.
We’re your point of contact throughout the project. We work with the makers on drawings, costs, and production, and keep you updated along the way.
Listen
Send us your ideas, reference photos, and any measurements you have. We’ll talk through how the piece will be used, your budget, and when you need it.
Define
We work out the dimensions, materials, price, and schedule with you and the craftspeople involved. Production starts once the details are agreed.
Make
Independent craftspeople make each piece in their own workshops. We coordinate the work and share photos so you can follow its progress.
Finish
We check dimensions, joinery, carving, and finish with the makers, then arrange packing and delivery.

01Who makes the furniture?
We work with independent craftspeople in Java, chosen for the skills each commission needs. They produce the work in their own workshops. Tanarupa is your point of contact for the brief, quotation, production updates, and delivery arrangements.
02Do you only design traditional Javanese houses?
No. We draw from shade, thresholds, ventilation, hierarchy, craft, and proportion found in Javanese architecture. These ideas can shape a home that feels entirely contemporary.
03Can furniture be commissioned without an architecture project?
Yes. We accept individual furniture and object commissions, from one statement piece to a complete collection for a residence, restaurant, or hotel.
04How does an international project work?
Concept and development can happen remotely through calls, drawings, samples, and photographed prototypes. For architecture, we collaborate with a licensed local architect or contractor where required.
05Do you ship furniture internationally?
Yes. We manage export-grade packing, fumigation documentation where applicable, freight coordination, and delivery paperwork. Duties and local installation are scoped for each destination.
06What timber do you use?
Our primary material is responsibly sourced teak, selected according to the structural and visual demands of each piece. We also work with sungkai, mahogany, rattan, stone, bronze, and natural fibers.
07What is the usual lead time?
Furniture commissions typically take 10 to 16 weeks after design approval. Architectural timelines depend on scale and location. We confirm a realistic schedule before work begins.

About the name
Tanarupa is a name formed by our studio. It is not a standard Sanskrit word. Its clearest root is rupa, a word associated with form, shape, and visible expression. We use Tana as a sound element that gives the name a natural, grounded, and crafted character. Together, they describe our practice: shaping ideas into architecture, furniture, and objects with material, place, and purpose in mind.
